Breathwork

A Field Journal of Succession

What does it mean to belong outside?

A quarterly field journal for ecological design, succession, and what it means to belong outside. Written from inside the seasons, printed in small runs, designed to be passed forward.

What You’ll Get

Each issue contains one essay, one site study, one practical page, one seasonal observation. Written with the seasons.

Upcoming Issues:

  • Issue 01 (March 2026): Grown, Not Overgrown
  • Issue 02 (June 2026): Topic TBD
  • Issue 03 (September 2026): Topic TBD
  • Issue 04 (December 2026): Topic TBD

Each issue follows two threads:

The plants — what’s happening in the soil, the site, the season. What’s establishing. What failed. What surprised. What the land is already trying to become without anyone’s help.

The people — what’s happening in the communities that live on that ground. How belonging works. How we fall out of communities and back in. How the same principles that govern succession in a plant community govern trust-building in a human one.

We grow better together.

    The Newsletter

Synthesis — a weekly field dispatch

Short. Unfiltered. Written from inside the growing season.

Inspired by plants. Inspired by people. A synthesis of both.

The newsletter is where the journal begins — observations from the ground before they become essays, questions before they become answers, the week’s garden notes and the week’s human notes arriving together without apology for the adjacency.

If you read slowly, in the right growing conditions, you’ll find the lessons.

Subscribe to Synthesis — free, weekly, yours to unsubscribe from anytime

      Why It Exists

This publication exists because the philosophy behind the work deserves more space than a website can hold.

It’s where Systems to Soil gets examined from every angle — in the soil, in the community, in the self. Where stewardship gets treated as a practice rather than a product. Where belonging outside is taken seriously as something worth designing for.

You don’t have to be a client to read it. You don’t have to own land to find something in it.

You just have to be willing to go outside.

Breathwork is published by Bryana Breathes Design LLC, Sandhills, North Carolina. Printed in small runs. Distributed with care.
